What a Columbus hotel means when it says kitchenette
Three tiers hide behind one word. Tier one is a mini-fridge, microwave and a coffee maker bolted to a shelf — plenty of midscale hotels along Olentangy River Road advertise this as a kitchenette and it is not one. Tier two is the true studio kitchen: two electric or induction burners, a full-height fridge, a proper sink, a dishwasher and a starter set of pans. Tier three, rare in central Ohio hotels, is an apartment-style one- or two-bedroom with a full range and oven. The reliable tell when you are filtering listings is the dishwasher — if it is listed, you are in tier two or above.
Price bands as of late summer 2026 run roughly $95 to $135 for tier one, $115 to $175 for tier two, and $150 to $230 for the handful of tier-three units in Dublin and downtown. Ohio State home football Saturdays, mid-August move-in week and the first weekend of March push all three bands up by 60 to 150 per cent. Weekly rates typically shave 15 to 30 per cent off the nightly, and Ohio exempts continuous stays past 30 days from lodging tax — confirm the exemption paperwork with the property before you count on it.
1. The Olentangy River Road corridor — closest real kitchens to Upper Arlington
The strip of all-suite and extended-stay hotels between Ackerman Road and Bethel Road sits two to three miles from Tremont Road and Kingsdale, which is why relocating families and visiting Ohio State faculty fill it every semester. Drive time to the Mallway is eight to twelve minutes on Lane Avenue or North Star Road; drive time to the Wexner medical campus is under ten. Expect $125 to $175 for a studio with two burners and a dishwasher midweek, and reliable free surface parking, which the downtown suites cannot match. This is the cluster I would book first for anything longer than four nights.
The honest catch is the buildings. Several of these properties date from the late 1990s and early 2000s, and the wood-frame construction transmits footfall from the floor above. Ask for a top-floor room away from the laundry, and ask when the suite was last refreshed — the gap between a 2023 renovation and an untouched 2001 kitchen is enormous here. Also check whether the pool and fitness room are genuinely open; smaller extended-stays in this corridor sometimes run reduced amenities. Groceries are easy: the Kingsdale supermarket and Trader Joe's are a seven-minute drive, and the Lane Avenue natural-foods store is closer still.
2. Grandview Yard and West Fifth Avenue — the walkable choice
Grandview Yard, roughly two and a half miles south of Upper Arlington's Mallway District, is the only kitchenette cluster where you can leave the car parked for a whole evening. The suite hotels there put you within a five-minute walk of Grandview Avenue's restaurants and a supermarket, which matters more than any in-room amenity when you are three weeks into a stay. Budget $135 to $190 midweek for a studio with a dishwasher, and note that parking is usually in a shared structure with a nightly charge of roughly $10 to $18 rather than a free lot.
Who should skip it: anyone whose reason for being here is school-district house-hunting north of Fishinger Road, because you will add ten minutes each way. Who should book it: a solo relocator or a couple who would rather cook three nights a week and walk out for the other four. Weekend rates in Grandview soften noticeably in January and February, when you can find tier-two studios under $120. Ask for a room facing the interior courtyard; the units over Yard Street pick up bar noise until about midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
3 and 4. Dublin: Bridge Park at the top, Frantz Road for value
Bridge Park, straddling the Scioto in Dublin about eight miles northwest of Upper Arlington, holds the newest suite inventory in the metro — 2018-and-later builds with induction cooktops, decent knives and soundproofing that actually works. Rates run $155 to $230 and parking is usually a structure with a fee. The trade is distance: 15 to 20 minutes to Tremont Road off-peak, closer to 30 during the 7.45am crawl on I-270. Book it if your work is at one of the Dublin corporate campuses and Upper Arlington is your weekend, not your weekday.
The Frantz Road and Metro Place belt, a mile or two south of Bridge Park, is the value play in the whole metro. These are the plainest properties on this list — grey carpet, dated bathrooms, exterior-facing balconies on a couple of them — but genuine two-burner kitchens with dishwashers start near $105 midweek, and 30-night rates can fall below $85 a night. Skip them if you need a pleasant lobby or a bar; take them if you are a contractor on a per-diem and you plan to be out of the room from 7am to 6pm anyway.
5, 6 and 7. Tuttle Crossing, Britton Parkway and Worthington's Crosswoods
Tuttle Crossing and Hilliard's Britton Parkway, both about seven miles west, are the fallback when the Olentangy corridor sells out for a football weekend. Suite stock is mid-2000s, rates sit around $110 to $155, and free surface parking is standard. Getting to Upper Arlington means I-270 north to Tuttle or the surface route on Hilliard-Rome and Fishinger — 15 to 18 minutes either way, longer if there is an incident on the outerbelt. Perfectly serviceable, entirely characterless, and the shopping-centre chain restaurants around them will wear thin by day five.
Crosswoods, at the SR-23 and I-270 interchange on Worthington's northern edge, ranks a place above them for one reason: it is the quietest of the three, set back behind office parks with almost no evening traffic. Rates are similar at $115 to $160. The drive to Upper Arlington is 15 to 20 minutes across the top of the city on I-270, which is the least pleasant stretch of the outerbelt in a snow event. Old Worthington's High Street, five minutes south, gives you somewhere genuinely nice to eat, which the other two suburban clusters cannot claim.
8 and 9. Downtown suites, and the Polaris outliers
Downtown Columbus, six miles and about 15 minutes from Upper Arlington on SR-315, has a small number of all-suite properties around the Arena District and near the convention centre. They are the pick if your stay mixes evenings out with cooking in: $150 to $220 midweek, valet or garage parking at roughly $25 to $40 a night, and walkable dinner options that beat anything in the suburbs. Rates spike hard for the March fitness expo weekend and for large conventions, so check the convention centre calendar before you commit to a long booking.
Polaris, 15 miles north, is last for a reason: the rates are no better than Worthington and the drive to Upper Arlington is 25 minutes minimum. Book there only if a Polaris-area employer is paying and you have no reason to cross the city. If you are considering it purely on price, compare a Frantz Road 30-night rate first — it will almost always win. One more note on all four northern clusters: winter road treatment on the outerbelt is good, but a January ice morning still adds 20 minutes to any of these commutes.
Groceries, laundry, and when to skip hotels entirely
Stock the kitchen at the big supermarket in Kingsdale, at Trader Joe's in the same centre, or at the natural-foods store on West Lane Avenue; all three sit inside Upper Arlington and none is more than ten minutes from any hotel in the top three clusters. What suite kitchens almost never include: an oven, a sharp knife, more than four of anything, and dish soap beyond the first sachet. Bring a chef's knife if you cook seriously. Every extended-stay on this list has guest laundry — usually $2 to $4 per load, card-operated, and busiest on Sunday evenings.
Past about 25 nights, do the maths against a furnished apartment. Newer mixed-use buildings in Grandview Yard and around the Lane Avenue and North Star Road corner rent furnished units by the month, and corporate-housing operators serve the Ohio State and hospital markets across the same footprint. A one-bedroom apartment with a real oven, in-unit laundry and a parking space often lands between $2,600 and $3,600 a month, which beats a $115 nightly suite once you clear four weeks. Hotels win below that threshold, and win outright if your dates might move.
