Columbus is a driving city with a suburban hotel market, so free parking is the default almost everywhere except two places: downtown, where garage or valet parking runs $25 to $40 a night, and the Ohio State campus corridor on football weekends, when otherwise-free lots start charging $20 to $30. Over four nights that difference is $100 to $160, which is more than the gap between a mid-scale and an upscale room in this market.
Upper Arlington itself has almost no hotel stock, so every option is a five to twenty-five minute drive out. The good news is that this means you will almost certainly be driving anyway, and once you are in the car, an extra seven minutes to a cluster with a free lot at the door is trivially cheap. Free parking also usually means surface parking rather than a garage, which matters with luggage, pushchairs, golf clubs or a dog.
1. Worthington and Crosswoods — free, spacious, closest to good value
Twelve to fifteen minutes northeast of Upper Arlington off High Street and I-270, this cluster is my default for free parking. The lots are enormous surface aprons, no permits or hangtags, and no charge in any season including football weekends. Rooms run $105 to $150, most include hot breakfast, and the indoor pools are full-size. For a family arriving with a car full of gear, unloading twelve feet from the room door is worth real money.
The catch is the setting: highway frontage, chain restaurants, and no walkable evening beyond a short drive to Old Worthington's village green. Rooms skew a decade or two old. But if your trip involves Northam Park, Griggs Reservoir, the Columbus Zoo up in Powell and Highbanks Metro Park, this is the cheapest all-in base in the region and you will never touch a parking meter. Verify parking is included at booking anyway — a couple of properties have started charging.
2. Hilliard and Tuttle Crossing — free parking that survives game weekends
West on I-270, the Tuttle and Hilliard cluster holds free surface parking and $95 to $140 rooms year-round, and crucially it keeps both on Ohio State home Saturdays when campus hotels are charging $400 for the room and $30 for the space. Extended-stay properties here add kitchenettes and door-side loading, which is the single most practical configuration for a week-long stay with a family or a dog.
You are 12 to 18 minutes from Kingsdale on Fishinger and Mountview, or via the outerbelt off-peak. The neighbourhood is big-box retail and nothing else, and pool maintenance across the cluster is inconsistent, so read the last three months of reviews. Book here when you have decided the trip is about parks, golf and value rather than atmosphere, and when the price difference against Worthington is $30 or more a night.
3. Lane Avenue and the campus corridor — free most of the year, not in autumn
Five to seven minutes from Tremont Center, this is the closest cluster to Upper Arlington and the most convenient for anything in the city. For most of the calendar, parking here is free surface or free garage and rooms run $135 to $195. That combination is hard to beat if UA is the point of your trip: you are ten minutes from Old Arlington, five from Northam Park, and walking distance from a supermarket and a proper dinner.
Then football happens. On the seven or eight home Saturdays and on university move-in weekend, hotels here start charging $20 to $30 a night for parking, add two-night minimums, and lift room rates to $320 to $500. Some properties also close their lots to non-guests and enforce it with towing. Check the parking policy for your specific dates rather than the general policy on the hotel's website, because the two frequently differ in autumn.
4. Grandview Yard — free-ish, but structured
Grandview Heights, eight to ten minutes from Kingsdale, offers modern rooms at $150 to $215 with parking that is usually free or low-cost but almost always in a structured garage shared with offices and apartments. That is fine for a couple with cabin bags and irritating for a family with a boot full of gear and a sleeping toddler two levels below. Confirm the arrangement at booking and ask specifically whether in-and-out access is unrestricted.
What you buy for the inconvenience is the best walkable evening within ten minutes of Upper Arlington: Grandview Avenue's restaurants, breweries and coffee, plus the Yard's own dining, all reachable on foot once the car is parked. If you plan to leave the car untouched from 6pm Friday to 10am Sunday, this is the smartest booking on this list. If you are in and out four times a day, take Worthington.
5. Airport and Polaris — free lots, wrong location
Both clusters have vast free lots and rooms at $95 to $150. The airport cluster, 20 to 25 minutes east, adds free 24-hour terminal shuttles and is the right call for an early flight or a late arrival. Polaris, 20 to 25 minutes north off I-71, adds a large shopping and entertainment district and the metro's big driving-range venue, and it holds better rates than Dublin during Memorial week.
Neither is near Upper Arlington in any meaningful sense, and the drive from either goes through the outerbelt, which means 40 minutes rather than 25 during weekday peaks. If you are booking free parking specifically to save money, Worthington and Hilliard offer the same free parking, similar prices, and half the driving. The only reason to sleep at the airport is a flight; the only reason to sleep at Polaris is something happening at Polaris.
6. Downtown and the Short North — where you will pay
Downtown Columbus and the Short North have the metro's most interesting rooms, from the landmark tower hotel on Broad Street to the art-hotel on North High, at $180 to $320. Almost none of them include parking. Expect $25 to $40 a night for valet or an attached garage, and check whether in-and-out privileges are included, because some downtown garages charge per entry. Add $100 to $160 to a four-night stay and re-run your comparison.
There is a workaround. Public garages a few blocks off High Street often run $12 to $18 overnight on evening-and-weekend rates, and the free downtown circulator bus loops the core so you can leave the car parked all weekend. If you want the Short North experience, budget the parking honestly rather than pretending it away — and if what you actually want is Upper Arlington's parks and architecture, sleep in the suburbs and drive in for one evening.
Parking in Upper Arlington itself
Good news for day visitors: parking inside the city is free everywhere you are likely to go. Tremont Center has a free apron, Kingsdale has a large free car park, Northam Park and the main library share free lots, and Fancyburg, Northwest Kiwanis, Sunny 95 and Miller Park all have free lots. Residential streets are unmetered. There are no pay-and-display machines in Upper Arlington, which comes as a relief after downtown.
The exceptions are worth knowing. On Ohio State home Saturdays, Upper Arlington posts parking restrictions and permit-only zones on some eastern streets near the campus walk-in route, and enforcement includes towing — read every sign, and check the city's current game-day notice. Griggs Reservoir Park's pull-offs on Riverside Drive fill on summer weekend afternoons. And the Labor Day Arts Festival on 7 September 2026 fills every street near Northam Park by 11am.
