Hilliard area guide: where to stay and what it costs

Hilliard is the cheapest place to sleep within 15 minutes of Upper Arlington, with midweek rooms from around $85 — and the trade-off is that almost nothing is walkable from them.
What Hilliard actually is
Hilliard is a west-side suburb of roughly 40,000 people built around a nineteenth-century railway stop and then grown outward in subdivisions and retail strips. The old core — Main Street and Center Street, collectively Old Hilliard — is four or five blocks of low brick buildings, a restored depot at Hilliard Station Park, a couple of taprooms and a handful of independent shops. Around that sits the modern city: Cemetery Road, Britton Parkway, Mill Run, Hilliard-Rome Road, and the interchange sprawl where I-270 meets the west side.
For a visitor, that means Hilliard is a value proposition rather than a destination. You are not booking it for atmosphere. You are booking it because a clean modern room with free parking and free breakfast costs less here than anywhere else within a quarter-hour of Upper Arlington, and because I-270 puts Dublin, the airport and downtown within reach in one loop. Treat it as a car base with a decent park system attached and you will be satisfied; expect a walkable evening and you will not.
The price case, in numbers
Midweek chain rooms around the Cemetery Road and Mill Run interchange area typically run $90-135, and the older stock nearer Hilliard-Rome Road and I-70 goes lower, often $80-110. Weekends soften rather than spike, because this is not a leisure market. Against Upper Arlington's $120-170 midweek band that is a saving of $30-60 a night, and over a five-night family stay that is a meal out every evening. Free surface parking and free breakfast are close to universal here, which is not true downtown.
The honest caveat is that the cheapest tier on Hilliard-Rome Road near the interstate is a genuinely different product from the newer builds off Cemetery Road — older buildings, noisier locations, thinner housekeeping. The $20 you save there is usually a false economy. Aim for the Cemetery Road and Britton Parkway band at $100-130 and you get modern rooms, pools in several cases, and a 12-minute run east to Upper Arlington. Rates move, so confirm on your dates rather than relying on these bands.
Who should book Hilliard
Families on a budget, sports-tournament travellers using the west-side fields and fairground facilities, contractors and long-stay business visitors, and anyone driving in on I-70 from Indianapolis or Dayton who does not want to fight through the city. It also works well for travellers with an early flight who are happy to take the outer belt round to the airport in 25 minutes rather than pay downtown rates. If two adults and two children need two queen beds and a hot breakfast for under $130, this is the answer in central Ohio.
It does not suit anyone who wants to walk to dinner, anyone whose trip is centred on downtown theatre, the Short North or German Village, or anyone here for two nights only. From Hilliard to downtown is 12-13 miles and 20-25 minutes; to Ohio State's campus it is around 9 miles. It is also a poor pick without a car — bus service exists on the main corridors but headways are long and the hotel clusters are sited beside slip roads, not bus stops. Verify any route with COTA before relying on it.
What is within walking distance — and where
From the interchange hotels, realistically: chain restaurants, a supermarket, a coffee drive-through and a large car park. That is not a criticism so much as a description of American interchange retail. You can walk to dinner at a national casual-dining brand in five to ten minutes from most of the Cemetery Road properties, which is more than can be said for some Columbus suburbs, but there is no street life and the crossings are wide.
The walkable part of Hilliard is Old Hilliard, about two miles from the hotel cluster. Park once on Main Street and you can cover the district on foot in an hour: Hilliard Station Park with its restored depot and summer concert lawn, the Early Television Museum on Franklin Street, which is a genuinely unusual collection of pre-war and early colour sets, a brewery or two, and a scattering of antique shops. The Heritage Rail Trail starts here and runs several paved miles west toward Plain City — the best free thing in Hilliard.
Parks, trails and the fairground
Hilliard's park stock is the reason to stay longer than a night. Homestead Park has a large barn, open meadows, playgrounds and a network of paths; Weaver Park adds sports fields and more trail. The Heritage Rail Trail's flat crushed-limestone and asphalt surface is easy walking or cycling for all ages and connects several of them. Combined with the Scioto-side trails a short drive east, you can string together a week of morning walks without repeating yourself, and none of it costs anything.
The Franklin County Fairgrounds sit in Hilliard and host the county fair in July along with horse shows, markets and consumer events through the year. If your dates coincide with a large fairground event, the nearby hotels tighten and prices lift by $20-40 — one of the few things that moves this market. Check the fairground calendar for 2026 before assuming a July midweek stay will be cheap. Outside those weeks, July and August are unremarkable here and rooms stay available late.
Getting to Upper Arlington and beyond
The direct route east is Fishinger Road or Trabue Road, which crosses into Upper Arlington in about 12-15 minutes and drops you near Kingsdale or the Riverside Drive corridor. It avoids the interstate entirely and is the run you will make most often. I-270 north takes you to Dublin in 12 minutes; I-270 south then I-70 east puts you downtown in 20-25; the airport is around 25-30 minutes on the outer belt, traffic permitting.
Rush hour on I-270 between I-70 and US-33 is the one reliably bad stretch, so plan westbound trips home to avoid 4.30-6pm. Parking is free and abundant everywhere in Hilliard including Old Hilliard, which matters if you are comparing against downtown's $20-40 nightly garage charges. Fuel is generally a few cents cheaper on the west side than in the inner suburbs. None of the roads here are tolled and none of the routes require a city permit.
The verdict
Book Hilliard if the budget is the deciding factor and you have a car. The sweet spot is a modern room off Cemetery Road at $100-130 with parking, breakfast and often a pool, from which Upper Arlington is 12 minutes and Dublin 12 the other way. Over four or more nights the saving against Upper Arlington is real money, and the park and trail network gives you something to do with the mornings.
Book Upper Arlington instead for a short trip, or if your evenings are downtown. Two nights in Hilliard saves you maybe $80 and costs you an hour of driving plus the mild dispiritedness of an interchange car park at dusk. And if you are choosing between the cheapest Hilliard-Rome Road rooms at $85 and a Cemetery Road build at $115, pay the $30. The difference in sleep quality is larger than the difference in price.
