Kingsdale sits where Tremont Road meets Northwest Boulevard and it is the least romantic and most useful address in Upper Arlington. It began as a 1950s open-air shopping centre with a cinema, and it has been chewed up and rebuilt in stages ever since — so what you get now is a mix of surviving strip retail, newer buildings with apartments stacked over ground-floor shops, medical suites, and a Giant Eagle Market District big enough to lose someone in. The Giant Eagle Market District at Kingsdale Center is a proper grocery hall rather than a supermarket: seafood and butcher counters, a hot bar, sushi made in front of you, a bakery and a wine section. Open early and late daily. Two people can eat well for around $25 and there is seating inside — the most reliable late option within walking distance.
Ten minutes north on Tremont Road, Northam Park has the tennis courts, the biggest playground in the city and open lawn, with the Upper Arlington Public Library's main branch at 2800 Tremont Road on its edge. Good for a two-hour reset: coffee, newspapers, kids on the swings, no admission of any kind.
Drive four minutes north to Tremont Road at Zollinger Road, where Tremont Center keeps its 1950s L-shape and its independent tenants — bakery, pharmacy, restaurants, ice cream. It is the shopping centre Upper Arlington is actually fond of, unlike Kingsdale, and it is at its best late on a summer afternoon.
Head west on Fishinger Road about ten minutes to Griggs Reservoir Park on Riverside Drive: boat ramps, picnic tables, herons on the far bank and a dam you can walk toward. Nine minutes southeast down Northwest Boulevard puts you on Grandview Avenue, where the Grandview Theater & Drafthouse at 1247 shows first-run and repertory with food and beer at your seat. The Lane Avenue bridge puts you at Ohio State in about twelve minutes. From John Glenn Columbus International Airport it is about thirteen miles and twenty-five minutes: I-670 west to SR-315 north, exit Ackerman Road or North Broadway and cut west.
