Timing: when the sun actually goes down here

Central Ohio's position at the western edge of Eastern time gives Upper Arlington unusually late summer light. Around the solstice in late June the sun sets close to 9 p.m., and useful light lingers until nearly 9:40. By late September you are looking at roughly 7:20, and in the depths of December sunset comes around 5:10 p.m. That December timing is genuinely useful for travellers — you can watch a proper sunset over the Scioto and still make a 6:30 dinner reservation on West Lane Avenue without rearranging your day.

Plan on arriving 30 to 40 minutes before the posted sunset time. Golden hour over the river arrives early because the west bank treeline blocks the last of the direct light, so the good colour often happens before the sun technically sets. Upper Arlington's park lots are free and rarely full in the evening, and posted park hours generally extend well past dark, though the lots empty quickly once the light goes. Bring a light layer: the river corridor runs several degrees cooler than the neighbourhoods once the sun drops.

Griggs Reservoir and the Scioto: the best water sunsets

The single best sunset in the area is over water at Griggs Reservoir Park, 2933 Riverside Drive. The reservoir runs roughly north–south, the far bank sits low, and the boat ramp area gives you an unobstructed western view with reflections that do most of the work for you. Parking is free in several lots strung along Riverside Drive, there are picnic tables and shade trees, and the crowd on a summer evening is anglers, paddlers and dog walkers rather than tourists. Go on a still evening; wind kills the reflection entirely.

Work north along the same corridor and Kiwanis Riverway Park gives you Upper Arlington's own slice of the Scioto, with river access, tables and a quieter feel than Griggs. The Fishinger Road bridge over the river is the sleeper pick: it has a pedestrian walkway, and standing mid-span with the reservoir opening out to the north is one of the few genuinely elevated water views in the city. Park on the Upper Arlington side and walk out — do not stop on the bridge itself. All three spots are free, and all three sit within a 6-minute drive of Tremont Center.

In-town parks that catch the last light

If you would rather not drive to the river, the city's parks handle it well. Fancyburg Park at 3375 Ridgewood Road has a broad open meadow with a low western treeline, which means long shadows across grass and a clean horizon — the best in-town option for anyone photographing people rather than landscape. Northam Park at 2070 Northam Road works differently: the tennis courts and ballfield lights come on as the sky goes, giving you that specific American suburban-summer picture that visitors never plan for and always end up keeping.

Sunny 95 Park at 4395 Carriage Hill Lane is the prettiest structure-plus-sky option, thanks to the relocated Amelita Mirolo Barn sitting on open lawn with a pond nearby. Shoot the barn's west face about 20 minutes before sunset and the timber goes gold. Check first that the barn is not hosting a private event, in which case stay to the public lawn and playground. Thompson Park off Woodbridge Road is the low-key third option, more shaded and better for a post-dinner walk than a photograph. All are free, with free lots.

Old Arlington at golden hour

Upper Arlington's other great sunset asset is not a view but a streetscape. The 1920s houses of Old Arlington — Cambridge Boulevard, Andover Road, Arlington Avenue, Roxbury Road — were built with deep setbacks, mature trees and brick and stucco facades that hold warm light beautifully in the last 30 minutes of the day. Walk south from the Mallway on Arlington Avenue and the light comes down the east–west cross streets in bars. It is the best hour to understand why this district is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Two practical notes. First, this is a residential neighbourhood, not an attraction: photograph from the public sidewalk, keep your voice down, and do not step onto lawns or driveways. Second, park sensibly — Miller Park at Arlington Avenue and Northwest Boulevard has a free lot and puts you at the start of a good 40-minute loop. Finish at the Mallway green as the streetlights come on, then it is a five-minute drive to Tremont Center or West Lane Avenue for dinner. No ticket, no gate, no cost.

Worth the 20 to 30 minute drive

For a bigger horizon, drive north on Riverside Drive to the O’Shaughnessy Reservoir and dam above Dublin, roughly 20 to 25 minutes from Upper Arlington. The water is wider, the view west is open, and there is free parking near the dam. Highbanks Metro Park on US-23 north of Worthington, about 25 minutes away, gives you bluff overlooks above the Olentangy River and free admission like every Metro Park in the system; it closes at dark, so time it and leave promptly rather than lingering.

In the other direction, Scioto Audubon Metro Park just south of downtown — around 15 minutes — puts the Columbus skyline in the frame, with the Scioto Mile and the Rich Street and Main Street bridges lighting up behind it. It is the best skyline-at-dusk spot in the region and it is free. Hayden Run Falls in Dublin is a lovely 20-minute detour but sits in a shaded ravine, so it is a daytime stop rather than a sunset one. All of these are easy from an Olentangy River Road hotel base.

Sunset with a drink, and where to stay for easy access

There are no rooftop bars in Upper Arlington — that is simply not the building stock. The patios do the job instead: Figlio Wood Fired Pizza on Riverside Drive puts you closest to the river with a glass of wine around $9 to $13, and Hudson 29 at 1600 West Lane Avenue has outdoor seating and cocktails in the $13 to $16 range. If you want actual elevation, Lincoln Social Rooftop at 711 North High Street in the Short North is 15 minutes away, and Juniper at 580 North Fourth Street sits atop the Smith Brothers Hardware building with the best skyline angle in the city.

For proximity, the practical base is the Olentangy River Road hotel cluster near the Ohio State medical campus — the Fairfield Inn & Suites at 3031 Olentangy River Road and neighbouring properties typically run $110 to $180 a night midweek, with free parking, and put Griggs Reservoir, Fancyburg Park and the Short North each within 15 minutes. Rates jump to $250 to $400 on Ohio State home-game weekends. The Blackwell Inn at 2110 Tuttle Park Place, around $170 to $230, trades the parks for direct access to the Olentangy Trail — a fine sunset ride in its own right.
